Dunkin’ Donuts vs. Starbucks: Which One Does Iowa Like More?

Fact Checked by Thomas Leary

Now that fall has arrived, Iowans from the western reaches of Sioux City to the far-eastern point of Davenport are craving a caffeine fix. Whether it be the Seattle coffee magnate Starbucks or the Boston doughnut and coffee chain Dunkin’ Donuts, there’s no shortage of options for Hawkeye State residents when it comes to their favorite brew brand as they peruse Iowa betting apps.

Like countless states from sea to shining sea, it’s safe to say that Iowa residents prefer their pumpkin spice lattes to the donuts and caffeinated drinks from Dunkin’.

Using data from Google Trends, StarbMag, and VinePair, IowaBets.com took a beat from Iowa sports betting and determined if each state preferred Starbucks or Dunkin’ Donuts. We determined the number of Starbucks and Dunkin’ Donuts locations per 100,000 people and the search interest for “Starbucks near me” and “Dunkin’ Donuts near me” to create a weighted scoring system.

Do Iowa Residents Prefer Pumpkin Spice Lattes or Iced Signature Lattes?

Based on search volume data, it seems that Iowans have a hankering for one of Starbucks’ coffee creations, as the state’s residents have a much higher search volume score for the Seattle brand versus Dunkin’ Donuts. Overall, Starbucks finished with a 1.8 weighted score in Iowa, to Dunkin’ Donut’s 0.635 total — showing the state’s preference for the mermaid over the Boston brand.

A total of 10 states across the U.S. chose Dunkin’ as their favorite brand, compared to 40 that picked Starbucks as their No. 1 coffee brand — showing the national preference for the Seattle conglomerate overall. Iowa was joined by neighboring states, such as Illinois (2.99 to 2.89), Minnesota (2.015 to 0.37), Missouri (1.95 to 0.51), Nebraska (1.88 to 0.655) and Wisconsin (1.63 to 0.735) in choosing Starbucks over Dunkin’ Donuts — showing how universal the love for the creators of the pumpkin spiced latte is in America.

The 10 states to choose Dunkin’ over Starbucks were Pennsylvania, New York, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Connecticut, Maine, Rhode Island, Delaware and Vermont — showing how east coast-dominant the love for the longtime donut chain is.

That love did not translate in Iowa, apparently, as Starbucks was able to score a decisive brand victory over Dunkin’ in the Hawkeye State, based on search volume scores, at least.
