Which Airlines Do Iowa Residents Search for the Most?

Fact Checked by Pat McLoone

Iowa is known for corn and Caitlin and when one of them isn’t growing or playing, folks look to escape the friendly confines of their state and catch a flight elsewhere.

IowaBets.com took a break from analyzing Caitlin Clark’s NIL deals and Iowa sports betting to see which airlines are favorites in the state.

Utilizing Google Trends, IowaBets.com analyzed the most popular airlines of Iowa residents by looking at the search results of each airline over 90 days (December 2023 to March 2024). Here are the findings:

There are eight commercial airports in the Hawkeye State: Burlington (Southeast Iowa Regional), Cedar Rapids (Eastern Iowa), Des Moines (Des Moines International), Dubuque (Dubuque Regional), Fort Dodge (Fort Dodge Regional), Mason City (Mason City Municipal), Sioux City (Sioux Gateway) and Waterloo (Waterloo Regional).

American Airlines tops the list among Iowans with an interest over time score of 84. American flies out of Des Moines International, to seven destinations domestically, and features daily non-stop flight services to Dallas/Fort Worth, Chicago O'Hare and Charlotte. It is also the largest carrier flying out of Eastern Iowa Airport in Cedar Rapids. Eastern Iowa Airport has six nonstop destinations on American, two on United, two on Delta and nine on Allegiant.

Delta Air Lines (77) comes in a close second, flying out of both Des Moines and Cedar Rapids. United Airlines (32) is third and comes out of Des Moines International, Eastern Iowa and Mason City Municipal. Southwest Airlines (28) came in fourth, coming out of Des Moines International to three destinations. Las Vegas-based Allegiant Air (26) comes in fifth, flying out of Des Moines International and Eastern Iowa. In late February, Allegiant Air was recognized in The Wall Street Journal’s annual list of top airlines, ranking third.

The University of Iowa men’s and women’s athletic team charter flights fly in and out of Eastern Iowa Airport in Cedar Rapids (CID), but those go through a fixed-based operator, Signature Flight Support.

The football, men’s and women’s basketball teams always fly (when they fly) through CID using charters at Signature. Other sports sometimes use charters at CID, but sometimes fly commercial. Those commercial flights can be CID, or at other area airports.
